What we do and who we are.
Romanian Rescue Appeal is a UK-based registered charity, which is run by Lindsey Church (Founder), two trustees and a team of experienced rescuers and volunteers. To date we run three safe shelters in Romania and have so far rescued over 1400 dogs.
We rescue injured, starving and homeless dogs in Romania from a life of suffering on the streets and from death in the barbaric public shelters
We have so far rescued over 1400 dogs and continue to save as many as we can with very little funding
We run three private shelters in Romania, providing food, kennel space, veterinary treatment and a warm, safe environment for our dogs until they can be adopted
We search for loving forever homes for our dogs, mainly finding homes for them in the UK
We raise awareness to the general public of the terrible cruelty suffered by dogs in Romania and promote humane behaviour towards the dogs.
Founder Lindsey Church became involved in Romanian rescue after seeing a post on social media about a large number of dogs that were being massacred in a public shelter. Prior to this she would close her eyes and ears to pictures and stories of animal abuse, only so that she could sleep at night and not be haunted by faces of pain and desperation. Lindsey started to look at the pictures of abuse and research the situation of the voiceless dogs in Romania. Lindsey founded Romanian Rescue Appeal in March 2014.
Romanian Rescue Appeal achieved charitable status in the UK twelve months later.
Romanian Rescue Appeal runs three private shelters in Romania where dogs are taken once they are rescued from the horrors of the public shelters or streets. All dogs on arrival receive a thorough assessment and are given any necessary veterinary treatment, warm kennel space, food, exercise and socialisation. Our aim is to rehome as many of the dogs as possible in the UK and Europe. Our private farms act as a vital first step in keeping the rescued dogs safe and well cared for until they find their forever homes.
Managed by RRA rescuers Ioana and Cosmin and their team, Barcea farm was our first private shelter and houses approximately 300 dogs. Mihaela also works with the dogs here, socialising, grooming and exercising them. Once the dogs are ready to be adopted, we begin a search to find them a loving forever home and promote the dogs on our website and Facebook page.
Rotunda Field in Tecuci was set up in May 2015 to help rescue dogs facing death at the horrendous Breasta public shelter. Located around 10 minutes’ drive away from Barcea Farm and also managed by Ioana, Cosmin and their team, Rotunda Field is home to approximately 250 of our dogs.
We joined forces with experienced rescuer Emilia Gheorge to build additional kennel space at her shelter in Brasov and to set up Safe Haven to rescue dogs from the horrendous Boldesti and Breasta public shelters. Safe Haven provides indoor kennels for the more vulnerable dogs and an allocated space for special needs dogs to help with rehabilitation. Emilia and her team of works look after approximately 190 RRA dogs.
Our network of trusted fosterers care for the dogs in their homes providing love and care until they are adopted. We have approximately 69 dogs in private foster homes in the UK and in Romania.
Lindsey Church, Founder
“I live in Merseyside and I founded RRA over 2 years ago when I came across the plight of Romanian dogs. I had no idea that suffering like this was going on in a European country. Having always loved animals I couldn’t turn my back on these dogs. I felt that safe shelters were needed to protect these dogs from further harm or abuse, but I couldn’t do this alone. I started to recruit volunteers and the group has gone from strength to strength and we now have three safe shelters in Romania. I am a single parent to 2 children and have a full time job but I still manage to be involved in every part of the charity.”
Jane Vernon, Adoptions Team
“Hi I’m Jane. I first became involved with RRA two years ago when someone told me about the plight of dogs in Romania and I wanted to help. I came across RRA on Facebook and became a volunteer. I lead the Adoptions team and we all work together to find these poor dogs a loving home, which is very rewarding. I live in Bury, Lancashire and have been married for four years. I have a daughter and one grandaughter and I run my own Dog Grooming and Dog food business”
Claire Cook, Administration
“I live in Cwmbran, South Wales. I got involved with Romanian Rescue Appeal after learning of the neglected and suffering animals in Romania and wanted to help. I do fundraising and promotion of dogs and I help in any other way that I can. I work as a home carer in my local community and enjoy socialising with family and friends. I have four dogs including two from RRA and I also sponsor dogs too.”
Kate Wood, Dog Promotions
“I’m Kate. I live in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. I work part-time in pensions administration and at home I have 2 children and 3 rescue dogs, including a Rommie rescue. I am passionate about animal welfare, in particular dog rescue, so when RRA appealed for volunteers I put my name forward without hesitation. My role within the team is to help prepare, update and promote dog albums on Facebook. It is an immensely rewarding experience to see a dog, who has had such a bad start in life, find a loving forever home.”
Debbie Dent, Dog Promotions
Hi, I live in North East Lincolnshire. I work as an administration supervisor. I first became involved with the RRA through a close friend who told me about the plight of the Romanian dogs. It is very hard hearing about, and seeing, the cruelty that the Romanian dogs endure on the streets and in the public shelters, but it’s far worse for the dogs having to live this awful life through no fault of their own. I just knew I wanted to do all I could to try and make a difference to as many of these poor dogs as possible. I started by fundraising. When the RRA posted an appeal for more volunteers to help promote their dogs, I applied and was delighted when I was asked to join their dedicated promotions team. Words cannot describe how rewarding it is to see the transformation in these beautiful dogs from being rescued to finding their loving forever home. My husband and I have two dogs, one of which is our lovely Rommie Rescue. Watching her grow in confidence and enjoy being part of our family has been a wonderful experience.”
Hayley Mussell, Auction and Fundraising
“Hi – my name is Hayley Mussell, I live in Hampshire. I’m a mother to a fourteen month old boy and work part-time as a Corporate Account Manager. I’ve been helping RRA since December 2014. I mainly run the auction but I am also involved with the fundraising team and help with other odd bits here and there. I have a passion for animals and have done since I was young. The cruelty that goes on in this world sickens me and shatters my heart every day. I know I can’t save every animal in the world but I’ll try my best to make a difference until the day I die. xx”
Richard Nash, Fundraising
“I became involved with RRA after seeing how they helped save the dogs due to be killed in the public shelters of Romania. My aim was to increase fundraising for RRA via websites such as “Just Giving” where RRA supporters fundraise individually or for an event, “Easy Fundraising” which enables anyone to raise funds for RRA while shopping online; and “ebay for charity” where anyone can donate a percentage of an ebay sale to RRA. I also produce our charity stand promotional items for events, such as banners, flyers etc to enable our volunteers to attend dog shows to promote awareness of Romanian Rescue Appeal. I have three very happy rescue dogs, love riding fast bikes, restoring old cars and have been training in Chinese martial arts for the last 20 years. I also have a very understanding wife…”
Karen Wilson, Website Administrator
“Hi I’m Karen and I live in Essex. I am married with twin four year old boys. I heard about the horrific abuse of animals in Romania through a friend that adopted a dog from Romania who had been blinded by a group of thugs. I saw how adorable this dog was and thought how many more must be desperately in need of help. I discovered Romanian Rescue Appeal through Facebook and when they asked for a volunteer to help with admin I didn’t hesitate. I have ten years’ experience as a legal PA at a London law firm and now as a full time mum I was keen to put my admin skills to good use. I am now responsible for updating dog profiles on the website. I have since adopted a lovely tripaw through RRA called Skye and I am proud to be part of such a good cause.”
Noemi Totos Girch, Website and Social Media
“Growing up in Transylvania (region in central Romania) and experiencing first-hand the way stray animals are treated opened up my heart towards all the neglected, scared little souls which taught me a lot about compassion, sharing, empathy and unconditional love. I am very honoured to have the opportunity to volunteer for RRA now, helping with admin and the website, a bit of photo retouching here and there to give these doggies a better chance in life. While doing so and focusing on the ones in need I tend to forget about myself in the process. And I’m glad I do…”
Our team of highly experienced rescuers in Romania work tirelessly to care for the hundreds of dogs at our private shelters. This amazing and dedicated team bridge the gap between our dogs being rescued from the horrors of the public shelters or the streets, to finding their happy forever homes in the UK.
